CCIO Update for Special #GivingTuesday

By the Christian Church in Ohio - Tuesday May 5, 2020

Dear Ohio Disciples,

We hope you and your family are well in these challenging times.  As a faithful supporter of the mission of Camp Christian and the Christian Church in Ohio, we wanted to take some time to update you on some of the things that are going on at Camp Christian and throughout the Ohio Region even as we navigate through this pandemic.  We all may be working remotely and scrambling to adapt ministries to a new, physically distant world, but we are nonetheless continuing to work hard to move forward in mission.  At the risk of employing a now overused sentiment, our ministry remains important, “now more than ever.”

GT 1

As you probably know, Camp Christian has been closed for events since mid-March, following Governor DeWine’s coronavirus guidelines.  Even though our typical event activity has been on pause, much has been happening on camp grounds.  Ted, our Campsite Manager, has been making financially feasible improvements throughout Camp, including a massive drainage project to insure our buildings are safe.  Ted has also worked with a volunteer to replace many of our existing lights with LED lights that will both improve lighting and decrease energy usage.  The Union County Health Department has also approached Ted with interest in possibly using Camp as an emergency quarantine location should hospital space become limited.

Blessing BoxWith the Free Store closed due to coronavirus concerns, Wendy, our Food Services and Free Store Director has been feeding local families each week in lieu of normal Free Store operating hours.  She and her volunteers have provided 384 hot meals and 76 pantry boxes for local families over the last 7 weeks.  She has also set up two “Blessing Boxes” in the community, one at Camp Christian and the other at the local elementary school.  These boxes are self-service food pantries that encourage people to “give what you can, take what you need.”  We are pleased to note that these “Blessing Boxes” are already in use by the local community who are both partaking in and donating to the pantries.

GT 3Our Regional Leadership, including staff, Visiting Regional Ministers, Regional Moderator, Treasurer, Finance Team, and Camp Christian Committee have been working hard to ensure we are operating as safely and responsibly as possible.  Jennie, our Regional Administrator, is still hard at work, maintaining all things administrative, including communications with our congregations and ministers, maintaining our relationship with Treasury Services, and keeping our Disciples informed through social media.  Jennie, is working with congregations and regional ministries to help maintain contact through virtual meetings and services.

Alan, our Regional Program Director, is working diligently with Camp Directors and leaders of our various ministries to come up with creative alternatives to our cancelled programs.  He is developing ways to connect with our Disciples to help offer faith and hope through this difficult time.  Especially now, we know we all continue to need our faith.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in all aspects of life right now, but the good news is that we know that we will get past this coronavirus and once again open our doors to you and your families- sharing our beloved Camp Christian and valued Regional Ministries yet again.  Plans are underway to welcome you back to Camp Christian as soon as it is prudent and in the best interest of our children, adult campers, dedicated staff, and generous volunteers.

GT 4In the meantime, please continue to pray.  Please continue to care for your loved ones.  Please continue to love and care for your neighbor.  And remember, God’s promise is that we are not alone in this.  God goes before us in all we do.

If you would like to help us with our continuing mission during this difficult time, we would welcome your support!

In Love,
The Christian Church in Ohio
